CURRENT CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Submissions are now open through June 1, 2025, for our second anthology, The Cat with a Permanent Grin (2026). Submissions for the blog are always open. Stories should focus on the theme of resilience as it relates to the human-animal relationship. Submission guidelines are below.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • Stories must be true (non-fiction). They must relate to non-human animals (of any species) and can be about your personal experiences/growth because of an animal, an issue threatening animals today, or other aspects of the human/non-human animal relationship. We are particularly interested in spotlighting species less familiar to people, like insects, marine animals, and reptiles.
  • If your story is not chosen for the anthology, we may still accept it for online publication on the blog.
  • Stories submitted for publication in the anthology are eligible for a $30 award if chosen, and those chosen for the blog are eligible for a $20 award. These awards are being made possible by the late activist and my second mom, Sherrie Carter, who left her estate to advance work for animals. Award payments are now only made electronically (PayPal, Zelle, wire transfer, or CashApp); no exceptions.
  • Authors do not have to be vegan/vegetarian, but stories may not promote/encourage the use of animals for food, fashion, entertainment, breeding, etc.  Please take a few minutes to read about our history and mission before submitting to ensure we are a good match for your writing.
  • Authors should include a short bio (up to 100 words) highlighting their relevant life/work details, including up to one link they’d like to promote.
  • Please provide links to any sources you use for data or other factual information.
  • No plagiarism. All words must be original writing.
  • Please keep your submission roughly between 500 and 3,000 words.
  • Stories must not have been previously published (but you may repost them after we have published).
  • If possible, please also provide one or more high-resolution photos to accompany your story (either owned by you or with permission to use. Please provide photographer credit).
  • Include your name, location, phone number, and email address in the document you submit.
  • Do not copy and paste your full submission into the box below. Please either email it as an attachment to laura[at]everyanimalproject.com, or paste a link to a document, such as a Google Doc, where it can be viewed, along with a link to any photos, in the form below. If you send an email, you do not need to also fill out the form.
  • Please give us up to 2 weeks to respond to questions and 6 weeks to respond to submissions.
  • Featured authors will be asked to sign a release form to grant permission for the Every Animal Project to publish their writing and photo(s) and lightly edit their submissions for clarity, comprehension, and punctuation/grammar, as needed.
  • Please note that we are particularly interested in showcasing stories and experiences written by Black, indigenous, and other people of color, as well as folks from the LGBTQ+ community.

Thank you!
